AutImage of smiling student sitting in libraryism is a developmental disability characterized by difficulties and abnormalities in several areas: communication, social relationships, cognitive function, sensory processing and/or behavior. Many individuals with autism have average or above average intelligence. Others function in the range of borderline to mild cognitive disability or moderate to severe cognitive disability.People with autism often exhibit scattered skills. Most people with autism show a pattern of relative or even significant strengths, usually in certain aspects of memory or visual perception.

Cumberland County Schools provides specialized services to meet the needs of students with autism with the use of researched based methodologies. There are programs located in a number of schools throughout the school system.  Through the Individual Education Plan (IEP) CCS provides a wide range of services for students on the Autism Spectrum.
